Jonathan Wakefield, has been selected to represent The Table Bay in the 2019 Distell Inter Hotel Challenge - one of the hospitality industry’s major showcases of food, wine and spirits pairing. The multi-faceted challenge, sponsored by Distell fine wines and spirits, is dubbed as the “hotel Oscars” and has become recognised as a platform for highlighting the talent and expertise of trainees, and giving them an opportunity to shine. Wakefield, a Food and Beverage Supervisor at Sun International’s five-star hotel at the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront in Cape Town, says he feels privileged to compete in this year’s Distell Inter Hotel Challenge. “It’s a huge honour to even to be considered for the competition. The level of competition has always been exceptionally high so I’m looking forward to see how I stack up against the rest of the participants.

The Distell Inter Hotel Challenge aims to encourage development in the hospitality industry, giving a much-needed leg up to young talent. It is an annual challenge run by Showcook, where hotels in South Africa are matched with Distell's fine wines and spirits. Young wine stewards & chefs are nominated by their hotels and compete annually for the top spot. The candidates receive training, do cook-offs and exams to improve and test their skills and awarded at a glittering 'Oscars' event in August.
