During February every year, South Africa celebrates the most significant event on its wine calendar: celebrating the wine industry’s birthday by commemorating the South African grape wine harvest. Cape Town and the Western Cape is home to some of the world’s most bountiful vineyards and boasting numerous award-winning restaurants, Cape Town and the Western Cape is a gastronomic wonderland, with a history intrinsically tied to the vine.
Four trailblazers of the South African wine industry were honoured during the industry’s annual Wine Harvest Commemorative Event – which took place at the historic Groot Constantia Wine Estate in Cape Town. The event celebrated the birth of South Africa’s wine industry, asked for the Blessing of the Harvest, and honoured role players who have shaped and influenced the wine industry. T
he South African wine industry officially recognised individuals in the following four categories: Tim Hutchinson, who has been chosen for the 1659 Award for Visionary Leadership; Cathy Marston, recipient in the Wine Advancement category; Ilse Ruthford recipient in the Growing Inclusivity category; and Dawid Saayman, who was selected in the Viti- and Viniculture category.
