In 1969, former cellarmaster Günter Brözel created South Africa's first noble late harvest from botrytis-infected grapes. As legislation at the time did not permit for wines with a residual sugar this high to be sold, special permission was obtained to sell the wine on auction, and so the Nederburg Auction was born, with the debut event held in 1975.
